Virtual Lego sampling

This webpage generates samples of six bricks from two virtual Lego brick communities (A & B). It's up to you how you want to interpret them. Does colour, shape or both determine a species? Is red the same as transparent red? You choose!

What can you do with these samples? One important question in ecology is how many species there are in a community. Is one sample enough to tell you that? Two? Ten? How does the relative abundance of individuals among species in a community affect your estimate of species richness? Have a play!
